Flight Lieutenant Learoyd was one of the pilots briefed to bomb the Dortmund-Ems Canal, Germany, on 12 August 1940. During this action two planes were destroyed and two other planes were so heavily damaged that Flight Lieutenant Learoyd had to continue the mission on his own. Despite the enemy anti-aircraft fire he managed to successfully drop his bomb load from an altitude of 45 metres. Although his plane was damaged during this action he managed to return to his base safely.
