Action: On 31 January 1945 Lieutenant Knowland was in command of a forward platoon near Kangaw, Burma, when an enemy force of approximately 300 men attacked them. When Lieutenant Knowland was informed that a forward allied position was put out of action, he stormed forwards and operated the forward posts machine-gun single handed until the wounded were evacuated. For twelve hours long he occupied this position and managed to beat off the enemy until he was finally killed.
Details: George Arthur Knowland is buried at the Taukkyan War Cemetery, Burma.
