Action: During a combat action on 28 April 1943 near Arada, Tunisia, Lance-Corporal Kenneally stormed towards an enemy position while he was firing his Bren gun. The enemy was surprised by this solo action and they broke up their lines in disarray. On 30 April 1943 Lance-Corporal Kenneally repeated this brave action. Together with a Sergeant he stormed towards an enemy position, inflicting lots of casualties to the enemy. However Lance-Corporal Kenneally was wounded in this action he refused to be evacuated and continued his attack. He constantly switched his rifle from one hand to the other and managed to evacuate some wounded back to their own lines.
Details: Later promoted to the rank of Company Sergeant-Major.
Lance-Corporal Kenneally’s Victoria Cross is publicly displayed at The Guards Regimental Headquarters in London, Great Britain.
John Kenneally died 27 September 2000 at the age of 79 years old.
