Edward "Ted" Kenna was raised in Hamilton, Victoria and left school at the age of 14. Until the offset of the Second World War he worked as a plumber. Initially he joined the Citizen Military Forces, but transferred to the infantry in 1940.

On 15 May 1945 the advance of a company was stopped by fire from a Japanese bunker near Wewak, New Guinea. Private Kenna appeared from his covered position and stormed in the direction of the Japanese bunker while he was firing his Bren gun. The Japanese returned fire and the bullets were flying all around him. Endangering his own live he kept on storming in the direction of the Japanese bunker. When the clip of his Bren gun was empty he grabbed a rifle from the ground and continued his action. He then killed two enemy machine gunners. Thanks to his brave action the bunker was captured without further allied losses.

Recommended on 25th July 1945 and published in The London Gazette on 6th September 1945. Decorations presented on 6th January 1947 by the Governor-General at the Government House, Melbourne.
