Awarded on: December 12th, 1944
Action: During an attack on the Gustav line near Monte Cassino, Italy, on 16 May 1944 the leading company of Fusilier Jefferson battalion had to dig in without any protection. During an enemy counter attack Fusilier Jefferson without any hesitation and on his own initiative grabbed a PIAT, stormed forwards under heavy enemy fire and fired upon the nearest enemy tank. The tank was set on fire immediately and the crew was put out of action. While he was reloading his PIAT the second enemy tank pulled back before Fusilier Jefferson was within range. At the same moment allied tanks arrived and the enemy counter attack was beaten off.
Details: Later promoted to the rank of Lance-Corporal.
