Awarded on: November 13th, 1945
Action: On 26 April 1944 after an air raid on Schweinfurt, Germany, a German fighter attacked Sergeant Jackson’s Lancaster bomber. During the fight that occurred the bomber was hit and fire broke out. Without hesitation Sergeant Jackson clipped on a parachute and, with a fire extinguisher, climbed on to the fuselage of the bomber, which was travelling at 380 kilometres at 20.000 feet. He tried to put out the fire but the parachute partly opened and he was swept onto the wing. During this action he sustained various wounds and then he was swept from the wing together with his burning parachute. During the landing he broke an ankle and was eventually captured.
Details: Later promoted to the rank of Warrant Officer.
Norman Ceril Jackson is buried at the Percy Road Cemetery, Twickenham,
