VICTORIA CROSS (VC)
Rank: Lance-Corporal
Unit: 4th. Battalion, The Queen's Own Royal West Kent Regiment, British Army
Awarded on: March 26th, 1945
Action: On 8 and 9 April 1944 Lance-Corporal Harman was in command of a small forward unit near Kohima, India. 50 meters further the enemy had positioned a machine-gun post that formed a great thread to the rest of his company. Without any doubts Lance-Corporal Harman stormed forwards and managed to put the enemy machine-gun post out of action with the use of fragmentation grenades. During the next day Lance-Corporal Harman was ordered to provide covering fire with his Bren gun for an advancing unit. When he noticed that a Japanese unit was digging in he left his position and stormed forwards. During this solo action Lance-Corporal Harman put five Japanese soldiers out of action, including one with the use of his bayonet. However on the way back to his own position Lance-Corporal Harman was mortally wounded and died at the spot a few minutes later.
Details: Lance-Corporal Harden’s Victoria Cross is publicly displayed at The Queen’s Own Royal West Kent Regiment Museum in Maidstone, Great Britain.
John Pennington Harman is buried at the Kohima War Cemetery, India.
