Awarded on: June 11th, 1943
Action: On July 22, 1942 at Tel-El-Eisa in Egypt the company to which private Gurney belonged was stopped by violent machinegun fire. Results of this were many victims, among them all present officers. After Gurney had assessed the situation, he stormed forward and eliminated the machinegun post and the associated crew with his bayonet. After he eliminated also the 2nd post he stormed, just after been outside conscience as a result of an exploding grenade, into the direction of 3rd post. At this time nobody has heard from him, until his comrades discovered some hours later his inanimate body.
Details: Private Gurney’s Victoria Cross is publicly displayed at The Australian War Memorial in Canberra, Australia.
Arthur Stanley Gurney is buried at the El Alamein War Cemetery, Egypt.
