On August 9, 1945 Lieutenant Gray led an attack on a Japanese torpedo hunter at Onagawa Wan, Honshu, Japan. In spite of the violent fire from the coast batteries and from five naval ships he continued the attack by flying at a low altitude, to try to avoid this hostile fire. In spite of these avoiding maneuvers his plane was nevertheless hit. Lieutenant Gray touched wounded by this action. But before he crashed into the sea he nevertheless hit the torpedo hunter, how these sunk immediately.
