Action: During the period of May 17 up to 24, 1940 Lieutenant Furness command a platoon that had been quartered in Arras, France. On May 23, the platoon got the command to accompany the release of a transport of forty vehicles to Douai. In the early stages of May 24 the transport made contact with hostile troops and immediately Furness decided to set up a counter attack. Under heavy fire he reached the hostile lines and could eventually push back the enemy. During this action Furness was touched deadly wounded, but because of his action the transport could return their way.
