Action: The advance of the section of Corporal French on September 4, 1942 at Milne Bay, New Guinea was stopped by three machinegun nests. After he had ordered his men to take cover, he sneaked forward and destroyed two hostile posts with throwing hand grenades. At the attack on the third post he touched wounded, but nevertheless he continued his attack. Then it became very quiet. His men, still in cover, sneaked carefully forward. When they arrived at the third machinegun nest they saw that Corporal French was killed by attacking this post. But, by this heroic action he also eliminated the hostile soldiers, so the rest of his section could pass this point and continuing their task.
