Action: The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Service Cross to Archibald Alexander Farrar, Second Lieutenant (Infantry), U.S. Army, for extraordinary heroism in connection with military operations against an armed enemy while serving with Company F, 273d Infantry Regiment, 69th Infantry Division, in action against enemy forces on 18 April 1945, in Germany. Although under heavy enemy fire, Lieutenant Farrar took over the machine gun on the tank on which he was riding when the gunner was wounded. From this position he fired at the enemy with the machine gun and a carbine, accounting for the destruction of several enemy emplacements. When the tank stopped, Lieutenant Farrar set up defense positions and sent our combat patrols. Lieutenant Farrar eliminated an enemy Panzerfaust team by killing the entire crew with pistol fire. Second Lieutenant Farrar's intrepid actions, personal bravery and zealous devotion to duty exemplify the highest traditions of the military forces of the United States and reflect great credit upon himself, the 69th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
