Johannes Jan Versteegen was placed as an enlisted man with the Cavalry on 10th October 1938. He was killed in action on 13th May 1940 as Dienstplichtig Wachtmeester, 1e Regiment Huzaren Motorrijders.

"Has decorated himself in battle by acting in deeds of courage, policy and loyalty, by giving proof of courage and policy in fightings on 10th and 11th May near Overschie, also by attending in an attack by the Depot Luchtstrijdkrachten on 13th May at Overschie on an outnumbering and heavy armed enemy at Overschie.
Voluntarily admitted himself in capturing enemy machinegun posts; hereby getting killed."
