BIOGRAPHY:

Captains Registers of Lloyd’s of London shows Certificate No. 007464, issued at Glasgow in 1917.
Lost at sea 27 February 1941, SS Stanwold, English Channel. On her final voyage, the Stanwold left the Tyne on 23 February 1941 and Southend on 26 February for Cowes, Isle of Wight, in convoy, with a cargo of coal under the command of Captain James McCreadie. During the night of the 26th, during the trip down the English Channel, she reported steering problems.
By 4.20 AM, the following morning, the vessel was sighted listing to starboard. No further communication was received from the vessel. Stanwold was presumed lost with her captain, crew of nineteen and two gunners.
The bodies of some of her crew were washed up in Pevensey Bay, East Sussex. Stanwold lies at a depth of 40 Metres, position 50.38. 10N 00.20.02W, distance 13.6nm bearing 219T from Brighton, 12.7nm bearing 142T from Littlehampton, Sussex.
His three brothers, Edward McCreadie, Peter McCreadie and William McCreadie also served with the Merchant Navy and reached all the function of Captain.
