Captains Certificate No. 040057, place certificate awarded Glasgow, 1910. Awarded Master’s ticket for sail and steam, made his first voyage from Ardrossan in 1901 on board a sailing ship.
Award Card: Nr. 41729.
His three brothers, James McCreadie, Peter McCreadie and Edward McCreadie also served with the Merchant Navy and reached all the function of Captain.

Awarded on: June 8th, 1944
Action: His OBE was awarded for gallantry at sea. His vessel (unidentified) was in a convoy from America when attacked in the Atlantic by German submarines and was shelled, taking a heavy list. It’s official destination was Hull, but the vessel couldn’t make it and William set course for Glasgow, remaining on the bridge day and night until the ship made port at Glasgow.
