Lieutenant Cutler has performed many heroic actions during his military career. Some examples are the reparation of a crucial telephone line under heavy enemy fire, beating off an enemy tank attack and the capture of an important enemy position during the period of 19 June/6 July 1941 in the Merdjayoun-Damou area, Syria. During a later action Lieutenant Cuttler was seriously wounded and when he was rescued after 26 hours his leg had to be amputated.
