For having displayed, at first as subcommander, later as commander of a detachment initially 58 strong, after the occupation of Manokwari on the island of New Guinea by the Japanese in March 1942, great courage, tactful actions, perseverance and capabilities.
Following the Japanese occupation, having moved into the interior and having inflicted on the enemy, despite difficulties and privations beyond description, great damage over a period of 2.5 years, causing Japanese authorities to put a price of Hfl. 10.000 and a reward of a large amount of rice and salt on his head and dispatching a force of 1100 men to destroy his band of guerillas. After having reported back to Dutch authorities, still weak and ill, to volunteer for highly hazardous missions.
