Action:

On 3 January 1942 the Japanese managed to infiltrate the position of Lieutenant Colonel Cumming near Kuantan, Malaya. After forming a small unit he immediately carried out a counter attack in which all of his men were killed or wounded. Despite two wounds in his stomach, which were caused by a bajonet, Lieutenant Colonel Cumming managed to restore the situation. This allowed his battalion to pull back. After this he managed to save isolated units, which were under heavy enemy fire. During this last action he was hit again, but thanks to his actions his brigade was able to pull back safely.
