Action: During an enemy counter attack on 23 April 1943 near Guiriat El Atach, Tunisia, Lieutenant Clarke’s unit was taking heavy casualties. Eventually Lieutenant Clarke was the last present officer and despite a head wound he formed a taskforce and attacked an enemy machine-gun post. Under covering fire he managed to capture the enemy post and took out the enemy machine-gun. Lieutenant Clarke was killed while he was trying to take out two snipers in a follow-up attack..
