On their way to Wewak near Dagua, New Guinea, on 25 March 1945 Lieutenant Chowne’s unit was halted by enemy fire. When he saw that the first platoon was taking heavy casualties Lieutenant Chowne stormed at the enemy and took out two enemy machine-gun posts with the use of fragmentation grenades. After ordering his men to follow him he was hit in his breast twice. Despite his wounds and being under heavy enemy fire he carried on his attack and killed several enemies until he was killed himself.
