During the night of 19/20 April 1943 heavy enemy machine-gun and mortar fire near Djebel Garli, Tunisia, halted the advance of a battalion of the 5th Indian Infantry Brigade. Company Havildar-Major Chhelu stormed forwards firing his Tommy gun and killing several enemies. After saving his wounded commander he was wounded himself. Despite his wounds he led his company in hand to hand fighting. During this last action he was mortally wounded but until his strength failed him he was an example of bravery to his men.
