Action: The Navy Cross is presented to Daniel S. Albaugh, Private First Class, U.S. Marine Corps (Reserve), for extraordinary heroism as a Browning Automatic Rifleman serving with the First Battalion, Twenty- Seventh Marines, Fifth Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the seizure of Iwo Jima in the Bonin Islands, on 20 March 1945. Gallantly exposing himself to the withering barrage of enemy fire in a voluntary effort to locate the hostile position holding up the advance of his platoon, Private First Class Albaugh fired his rifle with deadly effect, causing the Japanese to disclose a concealed pillbox by their attempt to silence him. Securing a bazooka and six rounds of ammunition, he advanced to a perilous position directly in front of the enemy emplacement from which he fired three successive rounds into the strong point, silencing it completely before he was struck down, mortally wounded. By his cool courage, resourceful initiative and unwavering devotion to duty, Private First Class Albaugh made possible the continued advance of his platoon and upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
