Awarded on: July 31st, 1945
Action: On 2 April 1945 Corporal Chapman’s section came under heavy enemy machine-gun fire along the Dortmund-Ems canal, Germany. The machine-gun fire was causing casualties and Corporal Chapman ordered his men to take cover. After giving this order he stormed at the enemy while he was firing his Bren gun and forced the enemy to retreat. He then picked up his wounded commander but during his way back to their own lines Corporal Chapman was wounded and his commander was killed. Corporal Chapman died on 3 February 2002 at the age of 82.
Details: Later promoted to the rank of Company Sergeant-Major.
Edward Thomas Chapman is buried at the Pentag Cemetery, New Inn, Gwent, Great Britain.
