Action: In order to form a bridgehead Lieutenant Colonel Campbell’s battalion had to cross a minefield on 6 April 1943 near Wadi Akarit, Tunisia. Despite the great danger this action was a complete success and 600 prisoners were taken. On the next day an enemy counter attack took place. Although wounded Lieutenant Colonel Campbell stayed in command, and thanks to his leadership the battalion managed to repulse the attacks and consolidate the bridgehead.
Details: Lieutenant Campbell’s Victoria Cross is publicly displayed at the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders Museum in Stirling Castle in Scotland.
Lorne MacLaine Campbell is buried at the Warriston Cemetery, Edinburgh, Scotland.
