Action: On 6 April 1941 Flying Officer Campbell flew a mission against the German battleship Gneisenau lying in the harbour of Brest, France. He managed to avoid the heavy anti-aircraft fire and unleashed his torpedo. The ship was heavily damaged just beneath the waterline and was forced to return to the dry dock that the ship had left just one day ago. After conducting this action Flying Officer Campbell’s plane was eventually hit and he crashed into the harbour of Brest, France.
