Action: During an attack on a hilltop occupied by the Japanese near Henu block, Burma, on 13 March 1944 a Japanese officer with a sword wounded Lieutenant Cairns on his left arm. Lieutenant Cairns however managed to put the Japanese officer out of action and continued his attack swinging around with the sword he had just captured. Doing so he again managed to put some enemies out of action. Although Lieutenant Cairns was wounded mortally in this action the Japanese were in complete disarray and fled the battlefield.

George Albert Cairns is buried at the Tuakkyan War Cemetery, Burma.
