Action: During the Battle for Arnhem, Holland, Major Cain’s company was separated from the rest of the battalion for the period of 19 till 25 September 1944. During this period the company was under heavy enemy fire coming from tanks and infantry. Major Cain stimulated his men to hold on as long as possible. Under his command his men were eventually able to bring the enemy to a halt. Although wounded Major Cain refused medical attention until the end of the battle.
Details: Major Cain’s Victoria Cross is publicly displayed at the Museum of The Staffordshire Regiment, Lichfield, Staffordshire, Great Britain.
Robert Henry Cain is placed in a family grave on Bradden Cemetery, name not on headstone. (Worth Crematorium, Crawley, Sussex).
