Captain Brunt’s platoon was dug in round a house in Faenza, Italy. On 9 December 1944 this house was destroyed by mortar fire. Despite being outnumbered he managed to lead his men to another position. During this engagement Captain Brunt killed 14 enemies with his Bren gun. When he ran out of machine-gun ammunition he knocked out one of the enemy mortars with a PIAT. His brave leadership inspired his men and they eventually forced the enemy to retreat and so making it possible to evacuate their wounded.
