On 16 August 1944, Lieutenant Watkins Company came under heavy enemy fire while they were advancing through a cornfield near Barfour, Normandy. The remaining 30 men carried out a bayonet charge and they managed to drive the enemy off. During this charge 50 enemy infantrymen were put out of action. At dusk, Lieutenant Watkins led his men in a successful attack on a machine-gun post and, some time later, managed to bring his men back to their own lines.
