Action: On 13 May 1944, Captain Wakeford managed to capture an enemy position by putting several enemies out of action and taking 20 enemies as prisoners of war near Cassino, Italy. During this action his only weapon was a revolver. During an assault on the following day, Captain Wakeford’s company came under heavy enemy fire. Despite being wounded in his face and both legs, Captain Wakeford managed to motivate his men and to continue the assault. Although being wounded for a second time during this assault, he and his men managed to capture the enemy position.
Details: Later promoted to the rank of Major.
