Action: During an action on 15/16 December 1944, Havildar Umrao was the commander of section of a gun battery in the Kaladan Valley, Burma. Havildar Umrao and his section caused the attacking enemy heavy casualties, but the enemy kept on advancing. When reinforcements arrived at the scene they found Havildar Umrao sitting next to his gun. He was wounded and tired and there were dead enemies all around him. The whole scene was a result of the heroic actions of Havildar Umrao. When the enemy had broken through allied lines, he had defeated the enemy in hand-to-hand fighting.
Details: Later promoted to the rank of Subadar-Major.
