On 27 October 1942 near El Aqqaqir, Egypt, Lieutenant Colonel Turner was in command of a battalion that was attacked by an enemy force consisting of 90 tanks. Despite heavy allied losses they managed to put 50 tanks out of action. Lieutenant Turner was very active during this period and he even manned a 6-pounder anti-tank gun. With the use of this anti-tank gun he managed to put five enemy tanks out of action. Only after the enemy attack was beaten off he accepted medical attention.
