Action: During an air raid on the Dortmund-Ems Channel on 1 January 1945, a Lancaster bomber was hit by anti-aircraft fire after dropping its bomb load. Due to this incident the Lancaster bomber was set on fire. Flight Sergeant Thomas reacted immediately and managed to free two gunners from their awkward situation and transported them to a safe location. Despite being heavily burned in this action he reported the incident to his pilot. The pilot managed to bring his heavily damaged Lancaster bomber back to base safely. However, in the mean time one of the gunners had died as a result of his wounds. Flight Officer Thompson was immediately transported to a hospital, but died there three weeks later as a result of his wounds.

George Thompson is buried at the Brussels Town Cemetery,
Evere-les-Bruxelles, Belgium.
