On 25 May 1945, during the assault on Beaufort, Borneo, an allied forward unit came under heavy enemy fire originating from two machine-gun posts. Private Starcevich stormed forwards, firing his Bren gun from the hip, and managed to put the enemy machine-gun posts out of action by killing or driving away their crews. During a follow-up attack he managed to put several enemy positions out of action in the same way. Private Starcevich killed seven enemies during this action.
