Action: On 18/19 September 1944, during an attack on several German positions near San Marino, Italy, a company of the 9th. Gurkha Rifles sustained heavy casualties. Although the bullets were flying all around him, Rifleman Sher stormed forwards without any doubts. During this solo-action he managed to put several German machine-gun posts out of action. He also evacuated several wounded allied soldiers, but was wounded himself in this last heroic action and died as a result of his wounds.
Details: Sher Bahadur Thapa is buried at the Rimini Ghurka War Cemetery, Italy.
