Lieutenant-Commander Beattie was in command of HMS Campbeltown during an attack on St.Nazaire, France, on 27 March 1942. Although he was under heavy enemy fire Lieutenant Commander Beattie steamed in the direction of the lock gate and manoeuvred his ship in the correct position for the destruction of the only German occupied dry dock that was capable of handling large battleships. At the same time British commando’s landed and destructed the remaining installations.

Lieutenant-Commander Beattie’s Victoria Cross is publicly displayed at the Imperial War Museum in London, England.
The Victoria Cross was not only awarded in recognition of Lieutenant-Commander Beattie’s own bravery but also in recognition of the bravery of his complete crew of whom many did not survive.
Stephen Halden beattie is buried at the Ruan Minor Churchyard, Cornwall, Great Britain.
