Action: On 18 May 1941 HMS Coventry assisted a British hospital ship that was attacked by German dive-bombers in the Mediterranean. Petty Officer Sephton was also aboard this ship, and was heavily wounded by machine-gun fire during the attack. Despite his wounds and heavy bleeding, Petty Officer Sephton stayed at his post and carried out his duties. Petty Officer Sephton died the following day as a result of his wounds.

His VC was stolen from Coventry Cathedral in 1982, Great Britain.
