Action: When the enemy had surrounded the section of Corporal Bates on 6 Augustus 1944 in the vicinity of Soudeval, France, he grabbed a machine-gun and stormed at the enemy through a hail of enemy fire. Although he was wounded twice during his initial attack Corporal Bates pushed on and forced the enemy to retreat. During this last push however he was hit a third time. But Corporal Bates still kept firing until his strength failed him. The enemy had retreated to previously occupied positions and the situation was restored. Corporal Bates died two days later as a result of his wounds.
