Action: During an attack on St. Nazaire, France, on 27 March 1942, Lieutenant Colonel Newman was one of the first men of his unit to be ashore. Under his command his men managed to beat off several enemy counter-attacks. After clearing a minefield he and his unit tried to fight their way forwards. Eventually the overwhelming numbers of enemy soldiers took Lieutenant Colonel Newman and many of his men as prisoners of war.
