Awarded on: December 3rd, 1944
Action: On 24 May 1944 Major Mahony’s company was ordered to form a bridgehead at the river Melfa, Italy. Following the formation of the bridgehead the company was attacked for the next five hours, injuring Major Mahony in his head and legs. Despite his wounds he refused medical attention and continued to lead his men. Only after the arrival of allied reinforcements the enemy counter-attack was halted and Major Mahony’s wounds were dressed.
