On 31 July 1945 near Singapore, Leading Seaman Magennis, who was a diver aboard mini-submarine XE.3 piloted by Ian Edward Fraser, managed to attach several self-adhesive mines to the Japanese Cruiser Takao under difficult conditions. At first he had to squeeze through a narrow opening, then he had to clean a part of the hull of the Japanese Cruiser before he was finally able to attach the self-adhesive mines. After all this he had to return to the mini-submarine with a defect breathing apparatus.
