The Medal was instituted in November 1949 to award all members of the Australian armed forces, the Merchant Navy and civilians for having served in any theatre of operation during WW 2. Qualification of the medal was 18 months in Australia or overseas.
The front of the medal bears the effigy of the King, the reverse depicts the Australian coat-of-arms with the legend: "The Australia Service Medal 1939-1945".
The ribbon consists of a broad central stripe, coloured khaki, flanked by two narrow red stripes. To the left of the red is a broader stripe, coloured dark blue and to the right of the other red is a pale blue stripe; khaki representing the Army, red the Merchant Navy, dark blue the Navy and pale blue the Air Force.
